Lockdown Diary of Feelings

In the past two months, have you woken up and said “I am irritated?”

Have you said “I am feeling anxious and I cannot stay inside anymore?”

Have you felt the constant pressure to post on social media about your productivity, and the maximum utilisation of your time and energy? Do you feel the pressure to attend every webinar, complete every skillshare course, attend workshops, work on your fitness and STILL remain happy and positive?

Admit it or not, we all have felt this way recently.

It is not humanly possible to be in a good head space every time.

What is this pressure? Where is this pressure coming from?

WHY does this pressure exist and WHO is exerting it onto us?

If you look closely and take a step back, you will realise that there is no one. It is us. We wake up and the first thing we check are everybody's stories. Someone just baked a new cake! Someone just did a new photoshoot.

We end up constantly comparing ourselves to everyone on social media, it is not just influencers, it is our closest friends as well. We compare and feel this tingling sense of insecurity and pressure to perform. To post new content online everyday, because if its not on the gram, it didn’t happen right?

But we must realise that this is a global pandemic and not a productivity contest.

All the people we compare ourselves to are probably struggling just like us , even more maybe. We must learn how to not give into this age old death trap of social media, but an even bigger trap ‘Comparison’.

We must realise that we ourselves are the source of our own anxiety and that it is OKAY to not be normal. It is okay to take a step back and although we must remain positive it is also OKAY to not be.

Let us also recognise that all of us are not hit by the pandemic in the same way. For some, the biggest struggle is finding the next netflix show, while for some it was the loss of a job, loss of a sense of security and no friends around to get them through something like that. So many people are away from their families, stuck in another city or a country very far from home. The few of us who got lucky could get on a plane and travel back home, but again, not before a 14 day self-quarantine period.

Without getting too into the downsides of this pandemic, because let’s admit it, we are all tired of having the same conversation since the past two months. All of us have had this conversation with our friends and family and all we are looking for is a respite. We want to see the light at the end of the tunnel. That precisely, is the point of this article, to get together and get this pressure off our backs, to just laugh and have fun times with our loved ones till we look for our next job, till we have to go back to our college, till we basically RESTART.

To ease the pressure, we have come up with a few solutions to help you cope with it and raise your spirits.

The most popular and full proof method that has been around since ages- Meditation. We all are aware about the various advantages of meditation. One of the most interesting studies carried out recently found that mindfulness meditation decreases activity in the “me centres” of the brain. And that pretty much solves our problem, right?

Sometimes we need to be freed from the clutches of our own mind.

So here we’ve rounded up 2 apps, perfect for beginners and to help you ease into a mindfulness practice. All of them are available on play store as well as the app store. In these apps, certain programmes are available for free, but you’ll have to upgrade to premium to unlock more content.

  1. Headspace: You’ll find a bunch of exercises here from managing anxiety and stress relief to breathing, calm and focus as well as sleep meditation.

  2. Calm : this app has been topping the lists of being the best app of the year since a pretty long time. Here you will be able to find guided meditations, soothing music, and bedtime stories.

Completely free apps:

  1. InSight timer: goes by the philosophy that providing you a daily meditation practice should be a privilege instead of a product.

  2. Smiling mind: It is a non-for-profit web and app-based meditation program developed by psychologists and educators to help bring mindfulness into your life.

We have also curated a list of various live sessions being conducted by influencers/bloggers and youtubers. From home bakers to classical dancers; for those who have a ear for music or are fitness freaks, here there's something for everyone!
